about

These are a collection of mostly ambient tracks I composed and recorded for the motion picture 'Garden Of Evil' by Larry Keating, soon to be released - a feature documentary that investigates the possible motives behind the killing of renown sailor and later environmentalist Sir Peter Blake. The film has much beautiful footage of the Amazon rainforest including the vast devastation it undergoes on a daily basis.

Included in this suite are also the Main Theme which is orchestral and a rather interesting version of two separate cues put together on top of each other 'La Ola Española/Oil Can Ensemble', one being a romantic Spanish melody in a small orchestral setting juxtaposed with a percussion piece played on an oil can and other wooden instruments). This was a very important statement to make and serves as the end theme during the film's credits. I say 'important' because to me it represents both the 'developed' world and the 'undeveloped' world currently at odds - however it must be that co-sympathetic existence could be possible hence the putting together of these two disparate pieces.

Also included is a solo piano piece dedicated to Emanuela Evangelista who is a biologist doing some extraordinary work in the Amazon. See track 8 for more about her info or look in the web links below to visit her website

In thinking about composing the soundtrack for this film and indeed any film I meditate upon what the origin of the music should be - where does it come from? What attitude should it have to the subject?
After some thought I decided to try to be a tree and write very still music with only small events happening that echo the nature of that stillness by their movements - much as the movements of birds, insects and animals serve to populate the trees mighty and sensitive presence through time.

Trees give life to everything on this Earth and we have very nearly pulled them all down. I say 'we' but it isn't 'we' as the people who live amongst the trees, the native peoples around the Earth are very aware of their mighty spirit and importance and look after and learn from them as we all can if are shown how. The most important things also seem to be the most vulnerable. What would happen if the power went out and all engines of industry stopped - who and what would survive? The answer to that seems simple.
